German Adjective Formation
Adjective formation (Adjektivbildung) is the process of creating adjectives from other word types using specific suffixes. This powerful feature of German allows you to expand your vocabulary by transforming nouns, verbs, and even other adjectives into descriptive words.
Common adjective suffixes:
- • From nouns: -lich, -ig, -isch, -haft
- • From verbs: -bar, -sam, participles
- • Negation: -los (without), -frei (free from)
Formation from Nouns
The most common way to form adjectives is by adding suffixes (and proper declension) to nouns. Each suffix conveys a specific meaning or relationship.
Suffix | Meaning | Noun → Adjective | Example | Translation |
---|---|---|---|---|
-lich | having the quality of | Freund → freundlich | ein freundlicher Mann | a friendly man |
-ig | having, full of | Stein → steinig | ein steiniger Weg | a stony path |
-isch | belonging to, typical of | Kind → kindisch | ein kindisches Verhalten | childish behavior |
-haft | having the nature of | Traum → traumhaft | eine traumhafte Reise | a dreamlike journey |
-sam | inclined to | Mühe → mühsam | eine mühsame Arbeit | laborious work |
-ern | made of (material) | Holz → hölzern | ein hölzerner Tisch | a wooden table |
Two important negative suffixes create adjectives meaning "without" or "free from":
Suffix | Meaning | Noun → Adjective | Example | Translation |
---|---|---|---|---|
-los | without, lacking | Hoffnung → hoffnungslos | eine hoffnungslose Situation | a hopeless situation |
-frei | free from | Alkohol → alkoholfrei | ein alkoholfreies Getränk | an alcohol-free drink |
-voll | full of | Hoffnung → hoffnungsvoll | eine hoffnungsvolle Zukunft | a hopeful future |
Note on connecting -s-:
- • Some nouns add a connecting -s- before -los or -voll
- • Examples: Hoffnungslos, Bedeutungsvoll
Formation from Verbs
Verbs can be transformed into adjectives adding specific suffixes to their stems or by using their participle forms (just like in gerundiv) .
Method | Formation | Verb → Adjective | Example | Translation |
---|---|---|---|---|
-bar | can be done | essen → essbar | ein essbarer Pilz | an edible mushroom |
-sam | tendency to | schweigen → schweigsam | ein schweigsamer Mensch | a silent person |
Partizip I | verb + -end | schlafen → schlafend | das schlafende Kind | the sleeping child |
Partizip II | ge- + verb + -t/-en | brechen → gebrochen | ein gebrochenes Herz | a broken heart |
The suffix -bar is particularly productive and creates adjectives meaning "able to be X-ed":
Common -bar adjectives:
- • lesen → lesbar (readable)
- • trinken → trinkbar (drinkable)
- • sehen → sichtbar (visible)
- • lösen → lösbar (solvable)
Formation from Other Adjectives
Adjectives can be modified to create new adjectives with slightly different meanings. The most common suffix is -lich, which softens or approximates the original meaning.
Base Adjective | Modified Adjective | Meaning Change | Example |
---|---|---|---|
grün (green) | grünlich | greenish | eine grünliche Farbe |
klein (small) | kleinlich | petty, pedantic | ein kleinlicher Mensch |
Note that -lich can sometimes change the meaning significantly, not just approximate it.
Umlaut Changes
When forming adjectives, the stem vowel often undergoes umlaut changes: a → ä, o → ö, u → ü.
Base Word | Adjective with Umlaut | Example | Translation |
---|---|---|---|
Mann (man) | männlich | eine männliche Stimme | a masculine voice |
Tag (day) | täglich | die tägliche Routine | the daily routine |
Dorf (village) | dörflich | eine dörfliche Gegend | a rural area |
Meaning Nuances
Different suffixes can create adjectives with distinct meanings from the same base word. Understanding these nuances helps you choose the right adjective.
Base Word | Adjective 1 | Adjective 2 | Meaning Difference |
---|---|---|---|
Kind (child) | kindlich | kindisch | childlike (positive) vs. childish (negative) |
Herr (lord) | herrlich | herrisch | magnificent vs. domineering |
Wunder (wonder) | wunderbar | wunderlich | wonderful vs. peculiar, strange |
Suffix meanings:
- • -lich often creates more neutral or positive adjectives
- • -isch can have negative connotations or indicate origin
- • -haft and -bar are usually positive or neutral
Compound Adjectives
Besides using suffixes, German also forms adjectives through compounding - combining two or more words into a single adjective.
Components | Compound Adjective | Example | Translation |
---|---|---|---|
eis + kalt | eiskalt | ein eiskaltes Getränk | an ice-cold drink |
himmel + blau | himmelblau | ein himmelblaues Kleid | a sky-blue dress |
stein + reich | steinreich | eine steinreiche Familie | a filthy rich family |
