German Negation
German negation primarily uses two words: nicht (not) and kein (no/none). While nicht negates verbs, adjectives, and some specific elements, kein negates nouns and works like a negative article.
Examples:
- • Ich schlafe nicht. (I don't sleep.)
- • Ich habe kein Auto. (I have no car.)
- • Das ist nicht gut. (That is not good.)
- • Wir haben keine Zeit. (We have no time.)
Nicht vs. Kein
Use nicht when negating:

Use kein when negating nouns with:

Position of Nicht
The position of nicht in a sentence follows specific rules. Here are the four main positioning rules:

Declension of Kein
Kein follows the same declension pattern as the indefinite article (ein/eine) and must agree with the noun it modifies in gender, number, and case.

Other Negation Words
German has several other negation words besides nicht and kein. These words already contain negation, so they don't require additional negative words.
