German Subjunctive (Konjunktiv)

German has two subjunctive moods: Konjunktiv II expresses wishes, hypothetical situations, and polite requests, while Konjunktiv I is used for indirect speech. Unlike the indicative mood which states facts, the subjunctive presents unreal or reported information.

Subjunctive examples:

  • • Ich hätte gern mehr Zeit. (I would like to have more time.)
  • • Er sagte, er sei müde. (He said he was tired.)
  • • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen. (If I were rich, I would travel.)

Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II)

Konjunktiv II is the more common subjunctive form, used for hypothetical situations, wishes, polite requests, and suggestions. It has two formation methods:

Formation MethodUsageExample
würde + infinitiveMost verbs (especially in spoken German)ich würde spielen
One-word formhaben, sein, modal verbs, common verbsich hätte, ich wäre

würde-Form

The würde + infinitive construction is preferred in spoken German for most verbs:

PersonConjugationExample with machen
ichwürdeich würde machen
duwürdestdu würdest machen
er/sie/eswürdesie würde machen
wirwürdenwir würden machen
ihrwürdetihr würdet machen
sie/Siewürdensie würden machen

One-Word Forms

Common verbs like haben, sein, modal verbs and some irregular verbs use their own subjunctive forms. They are formed by adding an umlaut to their simple past form.

The words "sollen" and "wollen" do not add an umlaut, but are instead the same in Konjunktiv II and in simple past.

Konjunktiv I (Subjunctive I)

Konjunktiv I is primarily used for indirect speech in formal writing and news reports. It shows that information is being reported, not stated as fact. It is formed by taking the verb stem and adding subjunctive endings:
